Landing at SJU: the drive west to Casa Nakhla

San Juan's Luis Muñoz Marín Airport (SJU) is about 1 hour 20 minutes from Casa Nakhla, mostly via PR-22 heading west. There are tolls along the way — ask your rental company how they handle AutoExpreso rather than guessing — and San Juan-area traffic can add time near the airport. Arriving after dark is fine: check-in is self-service via smart lock any time after 4:00 PM.

The drive: PR-22 west

From SJU, the drive to Casa Nakhla runs mostly on PR-22, the main highway heading west out of San Juan, before the last stretch turns up into the hills of Camuy. Plan on about 1 hour 20 minutes door to door. There are tolls along PR-22 — we won't quote amounts here since they change, but ask your rental car company how they handle AutoExpreso (Puerto Rico's electronic toll system); most rentals either come with a transponder or bill tolls automatically to the card on file.

San Juan traffic, realistically

Traffic near the airport and through the San Juan metro area can be heavy, especially on weekday afternoons — it's worth building in extra time rather than cutting the drive close, particularly if you're landing during rush hour. Once you're past the metro area and heading west on PR-22, the drive opens up.

A stop before the hills

If you want a real meal or your own groceries before the villa, there are a few good stops on the way:

  • Salitre Mesón Costero, Arecibo — the hosts' own favorite, ocean-view seafood and paella, about 20 minutes from the villa. Worth checking current hours before you detour.
  • Supermercado Econo, Camuy — the closest grocery option to the villa.
  • Walmart and Sam's Club, Hatillo, or Kash N' Karry — for a bigger stock-up, both roughly 10–20 minutes from the villa.

Arriving after dark — or earlier than check-in

Check-in is self-service via smart lock any time after 4:00 PM, so a late landing or a long drive west doesn't cost you anything. If your flight lands early and you're tempted to show up before 4:00 PM, message the hosts first — early check-in depends on the cleaning schedule and isn't guaranteed.
