An Arecibo day trip from Casa Nakhla

Arecibo is about 30–40 minutes from Casa Nakhla and packs a lot into one day: La Poza del Obispo, a public beach open around the clock; Reserva Natural Cueva del Indio, a coastal cave and nature reserve; and Salitre Mesón Costero, the hosts' own favorite restaurant on this stretch of coast. Here's a realistic route for the day.

Arecibo, about 30–40 minutes out

Arecibo sits about 30–40 minutes from the villa along the north coast, and between its beaches, a cave reserve, and the hosts' favorite restaurant, it's an easy full day.

La Poza del Obispo

A public beach on the Arecibo coast, rated 4.8 from 4,120 Google reviews, and listed as open 24 hours. It's a good first stop for a morning swim before the day gets busy.

Reserva Natural Cueva del Indio

A cultural landmark and nature reserve on the Arecibo coast, rated 4.6 from 4,090 Google reviews. Listed hours are 9:30 AM–5 PM daily, though as with anywhere on this list, it's worth confirming the day of: +1 787-550-7012. The reserve's Google listing doesn't give a street address — a sign this is natural land rather than a formal parking-lot attraction, so budget a little extra time to find your way in. If you'd rather add a second cave instead of stacking two stops here, the hosts also recommend Cueva Ventana, a separate cliffside cave about 30 minutes from the villa.

Lunch: Salitre Mesón Costero

About 20 minutes from the villa, Salitre Mesón Costero is the hosts' own favorite on this stretch of coast — ocean views, seafood, and a paella they'd send you out of your way for. As with any small restaurant here, check current hours before you drive out.

A realistic route

  • Morning: La Poza del Obispo for a swim while it's quiet.
  • Late morning: Reserva Natural Cueva del Indio, timed to its 9:30 AM–5 PM hours.
  • Lunch: Salitre Mesón Costero.
  • Save Cueva Ventana for another day rather than packing it into the same trip — it's about 30 minutes from the villa and worth its own visit.
